Leaders are the masters of change

The practice of leadership has always had a special interest in change, because leaders sometimes manage change, and also initiate change. An effective leader must understand how to improvise, and deal with uncertainty. These skills are important for career changers, although not all establish themselves as leaders.

In fact, many people never wish to become leaders, even though they might have some of the necessary skills. The responsibility of the leader is often seen as a burden. A good leader has an expansive sense of caring and responsibility, and many talented people prefer defined limits to their authority. In our experience, a good leader often has other people assign new areas of responsibility because of the leader’s effective handling of other issues. Naturally, some people prefer to avoid extra responsibilities. The growing leader will often experience boundary creep, and this may be unfair to the person whose skills are expanding, tested by new circumstances.

This brings to mind one of the greatest leaders I know of - who was a reluctant leader - George Washington. Also, Washington was aware of the importance of defined limits on authority.
