Winning with speaking

Confident speakers are regularly selected as leaders by peers and managers. According to research conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, college students rated good talkers as more intelligent and ready to make decisions. In "Confidence wins over Smarts" (Goodier, Scientific American Mind, Sep 2009, p. 15) the ability to speak up and offer initiative early was selected as a success characteristic - more powerful than intelligence or judgment.

Make an impact with your speaking. Organize your thoughts even if they are impromptu. Keep the listener's interests in mind, and offer a startling but relevant perspective. Select three points of information - which is easy for others to follow without being overwhelmed.

Executives and other decision-makers will remember you for your confidence and new information. Sound confident, and you may get the opportunity to add new responsibilities or close a bigger sale. Leaders emerge because they can enlist others in their vision.

Have you become a leader after a career change? I would like to hear your story. Please send me a note.
