Connecting, careers, and energy
"The Southwest Job Network kept me energized."
One career changer recently told me how important her job network was while she created her new business. The Southwest Job Network is not a job placement center, rather a skills and networking center; helping career changers reach their goals through education and expanded relationships. I recall my long period of unemployment in the 90s, and thought about how valuable my involvement with a job change center was for my self-esteem. I was given resources, a place to work and regular education sessions. I was also expected to volunteer some time to the center; this volunteer effort kept me busy and connected with others.
My worst enemy during my career change was inactivity. Only while I pushed forward, thought about opportunities and met them in advance, during this period, I felt empowered. A volunteer job network center can be a powerful resource for a professional facing a career change. The Southwest Job Network currently serves about 2000 career changers with little funding, and a lot of volunteer effort. Members can support each other by joining an innovation council, which may work like a mastermind group.
