Are you assuming something?

We all make assumptions when we plan. Goal setting requires that we look forward to the future, and most of us act confidently that the world will follow a predictable pattern. Our assumptions are built into the plan. Our belief about the future is built into the assumptions we make.

Smart planners are aware of their assumptions. The well-designed plan includes awareness of important assumptions. Ask yourself some questions about what you believe. Here are some suggestions.

“Have I identified my strengths and applied them to my plan?”

“Is my timeline realistic?”

“Do I know why customers want my service?”

“Will my marketing plan help me reach my income goal?”

“What do I have to learn to get there faster?”

Ask a mentor or a respected colleague to help you understand your assumptions. Another person’s perspective may help you confirm that your plan is realistic, or may help you make some adjustments.
