Little a, and big A agendas
It can be frustrating if you work with other people's complex needs. Here is a simple distinction that might help you sort out the (sometimes) inconsistent requests from a boss or a colleague. Learn to tell the difference between their agenda (little a) and their Agenda (big A).
The “little a” agenda is the view of daily tasks, routine work, and ordinary business. Assume that most people are looking at their “little a” agenda unless you know this person is a big picture thinker. This viewpoint needs a literal response with precision and a reliable plan of action.

The “big A” Agenda is the work of the long-term planner and strategic thinker. Most of us have an Agenda (with a capital A), although the Agenda is not discussed as frequently. Some people do not share their Agenda except at special moments. Respond to the Agenda with possibility thinking, and think about the other person's vision.
Have you ever been confused by someone who switched their level of focus, moving from their agenda, to the Agenda? You may need to ask a clarifying question ("Were you thinking immediately, or something for us to work on over the next year?") in order to be sure which agenda or Agenda you are talking about. Listen, and be flexible.

Good point. I'll have to keep this in mind when planning my day/year. Knowing which is which little a or big A, is critical.
