Leaders add vision to raw possibility
A builder may look at a piece of vacant land. With his or her experience, the builder may imagine a factory, a shopping center, or a cathedral. The ability to apply experience to possibilities is what I describe as vision.
Leaders provide the power of directed imagination to the challenges of work and society. The visioning process is a creative act, one that applies evaluation of the facts, a review of the assumptions, and the work of applied inquiry to explore the applications of vision to practical needs. Providing the visioning work, leaders make possible blueprints, contracts and specification lists. The work of visioning anticipates the physical labor connected with fulfillment of the big vision.
“One of the functions of a leader is to help a society to achieve the best that is in it,” said Allan Jay Friedman. The leader adds insight and positive thinking to an unstructured space, and create value. By sharing their vision, leaders unite people to create something new and wonderful.
I'm asking five questions about leadership experience. I'll use anecdotes and ideas in my book about career change & leadership. Like to contribute? Start with this survey: http://bit.ly/123dIL
