Set the bar high

On New Year's Eve, I talked to a friend that I had not seen in several years.  I asked him where he was working, as I knew he had been looking for work two years ago.

"I'm working for Amazon," he told me, and we talked about his work for twenty minutes. He was extremely inspired by his working experience, because the culture matched his values. I said that I knew Amazon values innovation, and he talked about an obsession with the customer experience.

My friend spent the most time about how Amazon develops leaders, and makes great hiring decisions. "We set the bar high," he told me.  I checked later, and discovered that this idea is one of Amazon's core values.  "We set the bar high, so when we hire a new person, we want him or her to work to be promoted at least two levels.  So we look for someone who can achieve exactly that."  I agree, hiring someone for their leadership potential two levels up is setting the bar high.

Would you hire yourself?  What is the bar that you are reaching for?  Are you preparing yourself to get promoted several levels up?
