Two strategies for troubled times
In times of confusion, there are two strategies that can help us all respond and evolve. We all have times that challenge us. The mental periods of doubt can weaken us. However, a positive person can rely on simple questions that guide one to a more comfortable place.
When facing emotional turmoil over life’s challenges, ask yourself these questions:
- What are the benefits to be found in this situation for me?
- Who can I trust?
First, look for the benefits in the midst of the turmoil. Although confusion is certainly difficult to navigate, there are bound to be some advantages that can be found. Change is not targeted against you! Understand the forces that are working around you, and evaluate. Perhaps the forces of change are not done working. How can you react to the upheaval? It is likely that other people are affected by the changes too. You may have a relative advantage that others do not see. Look for little ways to improve your situation without fighting the forces around you. Ernest Holmes wrote, “We should bring to bear on each new event the influence of the creative nature of our thought – an influence that is founded on an inward calm . . . which will reflect itself in the changing scene of our lives.” Apply a fresh review of your circumstances, and remove as much confusion from the evaluation as you can. While the conditions may be upsetting, your mind has the capacity to perceive the advantages for you.
Secondly, look to your community. Whom can you trust? Some people may abandon you during times of change, and others may be constant. Make a fresh review of your colleagues. Look for the deep relationships, the ones that give you encouragement and insight. Some friends believe in you deeply, and will never turn their back on you.
Begin with insight, and include community. The world may change regularly, and you can find a new place of response ability. Look for the benefits and your constant friends. The confusion will not persist, and you can emerge stronger.
