A spiritual journey
Spiritual transfomation is often compared to a journey. A journey represents hardship, yearning, and committed effort. The journey of a pilgrim deepens character, as many behold the believer.
The development of a leader is like a spiritual journey. The leader undertakes a great effort, with an uncertain destination. Leaders are not shaped by trifling goals! The leader’s journey is all about a big destination, the fulfillment of a grand vision. During the course of the journey, the leader’s character is tested and deepened. Those closest to the leader are likely changed as well.
It is an essential quality of the leader that he or she perceives a better place, a favorable state of the world. The journey to get there is not completely known, and will present multiple hardships. A vision may instill a sense of yearning in the leader’s community. This yearning provides a motivation to proceed past challenges without known solutions. The desire to get to a great destination fills the hearts of the followers. As daily habits are built and follower’s hearts become resolute, the actions of the community become committed efforts. The essential character of the leader is shaped by repeated actions which match the aspiration of a worthy cause.
The process of becoming a leader is like a spiritual journey. The destination is not completely known. One can predict that the leader will bear hardships, distress and doubt. Acts of faith shape the inner character, tales of the journey may be remembered long after bruises and injuries have been treated.
