Connecting with people

The Philosopher's Path in Kyoto, during Cherry Blossom season, March 2010.

Leaders build communities. The community may be a neighborhood, a nation, or a twibe on a virtual social system. By proposing an organizing idea, leaders attract others with like-minded interest.

The career-changing leaders in my interviews vigorously expressed the idea that connecting with other people was of primary importance in their journey to become a leader. As explorers in their new fields, the men and women that I talked to described the diversity of their relationships as fundamentally important to their journey. Emerging leaders have cultivated a resonant idea that is shared as a vision. Followers receive that vision, and place themselves into the picture.

If the career changer has an idea of great potential, that idea may serve as the kernel for transformation. Powerful ideas change individuals.  Once infected with a vision of great potential, people tend to share it with others. In this way, the career changer may unintentionally “stumble” into the leader’s role. The combination of a transformational idea expressed as a vision, and the act of connecting with others regularly may be enough to establish a person as an emerging leader.
