The job as a building block toward a career

Hate your job? It isn’t always feasible to quit and start over. Think about taking an incremental approach to a better work experience. You are not powerless over your situation, and while employed, you may have the best chance to steer your career to a more satisfying path.

Think of your work now, and where you would like to be. Imagine the gap between the two places as a staircase.  Perhaps you only have a few steps to take before your career is much more satisfying, a reflection of your dream!

Can you identify three to five building block steps that will bring you to a better career phase? Perhaps your ideal work isn’t possible with your current company, however you can certainly improve the satisfaction with your work, and add to your skills in the process. You may find that after going through this transition that your employer will need someone with your skills to evolve into your dream job. You might be working now to create a job that doesn’t yet exist for yourself.

Identify each of the three or more building blocks in writing. Specify what the work will be like for you after each of the stages is attained. Think about what you must offer your boss and company to reach that first building block.
